Empowering Communities Through Financial Access to Clean Cooking
Yesterday, Ethiopian Clean Cooking Alliance (ECCA) had the privilege of hosting the leadership team of Yegna Microfinance S.C.—Mr. Derash Behailu and Mr. Ebisa Deribe—alongside Mr. Abdi Mulugeta, founder of #Abdi_Electrical_and_Electromechanical_Enterprise, for an engaging and forward-looking discussion on how #microfinance can drive progress in the clean cooking sector.
This meeting marked a pioneering step for ECCA in formally engaging with financial institutions to strengthen both the supply and demand sides of clean cooking technology dissemination. Together, we aim to tackle two of the sector’s most pressing challenges: #affordability and #accessibility—particularly for underserved and low-income communities.
Financial institutions like Yegna Microfinance S.C play a critical role in bridging this gap. By providing tailored loan facilities to both end users and businesses across the value chain—manufacturers, distributors, and retailers—they can help scale production, expand distribution, and ultimately accelerate access to reliable and clean cooking alternatives.
With Yegna’s guiding vision of “Empowering Communities, Enabling Growth,” this partnership strongly aligns with Ethiopia’s national goal of achieving 75% clean cooking access by 2035.
This collaboration represents a significant move toward building inclusive, sustainable energy solutions that ensure #Leave_No_One_Behind.

On June 24, 2025, a historic milestone was achieved with the official launching of Ethiopia’s National Clean Cooking Roadmap, hosted at the Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE) Hall. The event marked a transformative moment in the country’s journey toward universal access to clean, modern, and sustainable cooking solutions.
The ceremony was not only symbolic but also action-oriented, bringing together high-level commitments from key government institutions. Notable pledges of collaboration and support were made by the Ministry of Agriculture, Ethiopia, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Planning and Development Ethiopia, #Environmental_Protection_Authority (EPA), #Ethiopian_Forest_Development (EFD), Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP), Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU), and the #Petroleum_and_Energy_Authority (PEA). These institutions recognized clean cooking as a cross-cutting national priority with implications for health, climate, gender equality, and economic development.
The event also saw strong engagement from Ethiopia’s regional bureaus, demonstrating a unified national commitment. Additionally, country representatives and international development partners—including UNDP, UNICEF, UN Women, and the SNV, Energising Development (EnDev) Vita Impact World Resources Institute, World Vision, Mercy Corps and many others—expressed their continued support for accelerating clean cooking access in line with global climate and development goals.
The private sector was well-represented, with participation from local stove producers, importers, distributors, and cookstove, biogas associations, highlighting the essential role of market-based solutions. Financial institutions including Development Bank of Ethiopia and CSOs were also in attendance, signaling a multi-stakeholder approach to driving clean cooking adoption at scale.
The event was richly captured through photos, commemorating not only the launch but also the collective spirit of collaboration that defined the day. This memorable occasion set a strong foundation for implementation, mobilizing national and international actors to act in a coordinated and impactful manner to ensure that clean cooking is no longer a neglected issue, but a central pillar of Ethiopia’s sustainable development agenda.
